Love My City

I often get asked, “where do you get the inspiration or ideas for the art?”

My answer to that question has not changed since the lunch bags began. I primarily look at the various school activities, sports and adventures that Macallen and Morgan are engaged in. Family events, trips and talks often show up on the bags too1 The bags have become a history of our life, effectively memorializing our life, like photographs do.

But sometimes life happens and the bags just follow.

One February morning, the bags did follow ‘life’. Upon completing my morning journal, my phone beeped with a suggested video/podcast called Love Our City.  For whatever reason, I decided to watch it, and loved it. The podcast is about hearing the call to serve and love the city you live in, and then doing something about it. It is a wonderful story of a church loving and strengthening their own community, one person, and one act of kindness at a time.

Inspired to share that message from the church in Tampa Florida, I drew this bag “Love Our City”. And it reminded me why I began to draw lunch bags in the first place; to love, share and connect with my kids and wife. To have a way to talk with them, and memorialize our life, differently.  There are many ways to serve and love, lunch bags are just one way I get to do it. And for that, I am grateful.

PS - Inspired by the message in the video, I drew this “kindness” bag too!
