Art Day

Friday September 3rd was the first day of 5th grade art class, and Morgan said, “draw me something ‘artsy’ and fun”. It had me thinking about art class in school, more over, how we talk about art class relative to other classes in school.

My intuition is that Art is often underrated in the hierarchy of school curriculum. In part, its lack of status is a result of how we talk about it. Art is discussed as an activity, not as the mediums, techniques and tools we use to create art. Much less is discussed regarding the reasons we create, let alone share art. Sure, as you move along in school there is art history, but what about art today?  What words would I use to talk Art today?

Art is first and foremost a means of expression. We create an understanding of the world around us through art and share it accordingly.

Art is the conclusion of shapes and colors we choose to synthesize. And it is often accompanied with words or symbols to help the audience receive it.

Art is a tool to develop critical thinking and promotes open thinking.

Art is comparable to other academic disciplines such as algebra and physics. Advanced studies of mathematics techniques and scientific methods allow for greater creativity while tackling more complex and nuanced challenges.

Art is not any different. Through study and practice, we discover and develop the knowledge to manipulate various mediums into meaningful expression

The creativity required to succeed in art and science is really not that different. And, it is the creative application of that knowledge which advances the various disciplines and makes them special, and can lead to greatness.

I may use color pencils and markers to draw on inexpensive brown bags from Target. Don’t worry, greatness is not my aim. My art is not intended to be groundbreaking in design or style, or push some boundary of artistic norms. It is simply a chance to share our life, tell a story, and give us a place to connect

I hope you enjoy the lunch bags. Our life in color.
